Maewing – Taming Feeding, Breeding and what to level

Ein ZÜchtertraum Wird Wahr (1)

Let’s learn something about the Maewing. This is a creature that was introduced in the game with the DLC Genesis 2. The Meawing is unique in many of its characteristics and helpful no matter what stage of the game you are in. The name Maewing is very reminiscent of the name Mei Yin. Those who know a bit about ARK lore know that this is a warrior who became famous for her ability to gather and tame the most dangerous animals. She was known and feared as the Beast Queen. To have a mount that is largely concerned with the raising of creatures and ensuring their wellbeing named so similar, that cannot be a coincidence.

The Maewing is a cross between a Platypus and a Sugar glider, both animals native to Australia. However, the Maewing is so massive that it can easily carry a player when equipped with a saddle.

In the first draft of the concept art it seemed quite different, and we thought that it might be another shoulder pet.

How to craft a Maewing Saddle?

  • 320 x Hide
  • 170 xFiber
  • 30 x Metal Ingots

And you need to be at least level 19 to learn the engram.

Which animals can carry a Maewing?

The Maewing is fairly big itself so it can only be carried by a Wyvern, Quetzel or a Skiff.

On which Maps do the Maewings spawn?

The Maewing originates on Genesis 2 but has since then been brought to Lost Island and Fjordur as well. Lost Island and Fjordur are  the perfect maps to get the Maewing when you haven’t bought the Genesis Season Pass.

Taming a Maewing

But first, let’s talk about how the Maewing is tamed. This is a classic knock out tame and the Maewing can be tamed with basic kibble, meat as well as berries and vegetables. The only difficulty is to either immobilise the Maewing with a net cannon or trap it. This is especially tricky because the trap must also be closed at the top, because as soon as you attack the Maewing, it will jump into the air and flee. This happens at a speed that makes it hard for you to keep up, even with the Federation Exosuit. However, the harpoon and the net mution can only be made at level 43, so it is only interesting later in the game.

The easiest way to do it is to sneak up on a Meawing and place at least three billboards on top of it. The billboards will get it stuck and you can safely knock it out this way. While this is a little bit of a cheese method, it works.

But now let’s get to the different roles that await the Maewing in the game

Maewing as a mount:

First up is the most obvious of all the roles and that is as an early game mount. To make the saddle you only need to be level 19. The Maewing cannot fly but it can glide. It is quite similar to the Rockdrake, but unlike the Rockdrake it can also glide on the ground, destroying obstacles such as rocks and trees that are in its way. In this gliding motion you can also take off again and continue gliding through the air. If you are in the air and want to land gently, you can turn the Meawing into a parachute by holding down the right mouse button. In the water, the Maewing does not use oxygen, so it can dive indefinitely. In addition, it glides over the water at high speed and can also jump into the air from the surface. With a little practice, you can quickly master this unusual sequence of movements. The Maewing thus becomes a fast mount with which you can get from A to B quickly.

Farming with the Maewing

The Maewing should also not to be discounted at as a farmer, especially in the early Game. It collects meat and berries. Super helpful at the very beginning.

Maewing as Nanny/Baby trough

The Maewing probably has the most important task in raising your dino babies. If you put the preferred food of your babies into the Maewing’s inventory and then activate Nursing via the radial menu, the Maewing becomes a trough for your little ones. The range is relatively small at first, but when you level up the Nursing Efficiency, the range increases by one metre per 10 levels. Here you can see the comparison between the smallest and the largest size.

Nursing Range differences

You cannot increase the Nursing Efficiency by mutating or finding better levels cause it acts like movement speed. You can only level it up. It directly replaces the speed on the Maewing. Level in Nursing Efficiency do not increase the speed.

There is another thing that Nursing Efficiency improves and that is how much food the little ones need. The higher the percentage, the more efficient the food and the less they require. If you also have the little ones in a kangaroo with mate boost, you can save quite a bit on food costs.

Baby transport and imprint helpers

If you don’t have any Cryos, you can transport up to four babies with the Maewing and its baskets in the saddle and even make imprints in them. These still have to be done manually, but running imprints in particular are much easier. Just whistle the baby in the basket to follow and then walk or glide around with the Maewing.

Maewing as a baby thief

But now we enter the PvP realm and an exclusive point and that is the baby theft, because if you are close to enemy dino babies with a Maewing, then you can simply steal them. The Maewing unclaims and claims enemy baby dinos and can then glide away with them in the basket. Let babies grow up outside? Better not any more.

Maewing Eggs for Kibble production

Maewings all lay eggs. Although the Maewing does not show any gender, within the game all Maewings are female. The special thing about Maewing eggs—they come with different qualities. The qualities have no influence on the hatching baby, but the different eggs can be used for the corresponding kibble. The higher the quality of the egg, the lower the chance to get it.

As you can see, the Maewing is universal and that makes it a mount you definitely want to have. Not only does it make breeding so much easier, but I feel like for the first time we’ve got an all-rounder that can play a role not only in PvE but also PvP and that takes on different roles within the game. Chapeu to the person who came up with the concept of the Maewing.

Wihin the community, the Maewing has gone from being an underdog to one of the most popular new animals introduced with Genesis 2.

What does the Maewing eat?

Maewings are Omnivores and will eat meat, berries and vegetables. They will prefer the food with the lowest food value tho and it that one first.

How do you breed a Maewing?

All Maewings are genderless and therefore breeding with them is a little different than with other animals. If you breed two Maewings, both will lay an egg and will get a mating cooldown. While twice the amount of eggs sounds nice – line breeding with the Maewing is not so nice especially when you want to use a mutator, because every Maewing on mating setting will just mate with every Maewing closeby. These animals are probably together with the snails the least favorite animals to breed for mutations.

When you breed them, the baby will hatch from the egg. The quality of the egg has no influence on the quality or stats of the baby. It’s simply to decide which kind of kibble you can make with that egg. It is handy to raise the babies with the Maewing you used for breeding. Then they are a tame you just hatch, imprint and forget about it.

Which color regions are used on the Maewing?

  • Region 0: Body (The sides, parts of the face, around the edge of the tail)
  • Region 1: Belly (The belly of the Maewing. Careful, Wildcard named this region wrong and the info is also wrong in the Wiki)
  • Region 2: Stripes (The Stripes that are over the whole body)
  • Region 3: Beak (Self explaining – the little ducky snoot)
  • Region 4: Membrane accents (This one was confused with the belly. It colors the membranes, cheeks, chin and parts of the belly)
  • Region 5: Back (The fur on the back, head and the upper part of the legs)
