The Megatherium is one of the most popular animals to defeat the Broodmother boss on any given map. But aside from being a spider killer it is still a very useful tame to have.
Megatherium Roles:
I mentioned the Megatheriums role as a Boss killer for the Broodmother but that is not where its usability ends. I personally love using Megatheriums for farming chitin and organic polymer when farming Karkinos. They are also an amazing tame to farm berries and meat since they can farm both as being omnivores.
- Farmer: Farms meat and berries alike
- Boss animal: Defeats the Broodmother in no-time
- Cave animal: Gets a buff from killing insects
On which maps do Megatheriums spawn?
Megatheriums spawn on all maps excluding Aberration. The second variant R-Megatherium spawn on Genesis 2 and Lost Island.
Taming a Megatherium:
The Megatherium is a classic knock out tame. Since they spawn in the redwoods and in the snow area of maps, the biggest challenge is not to knock them out and to tame them but to keep them safe while they are taming. I personally suggest using a trap like this one to lure the Megatherium in it or to use a Net gun to immobilize it while shooting tranq darts at it.
What taming food does the Megatherium eat?
The Megatherium is an omnivore and therefore has a whole collection of foods it will eat. This is the order of taming foods with which Megatheriums tame best.
- Superior Kibble
- Giant Bee Honey
- Raw Mutton
- Raw Prime Meat
- Cooked Lamp Chops
- Cooked Prime Meat
- Raw Prime Fish Meat
- Raw Meat
- Mejoberries
- Cooked Meat
- Berries
- Raw Fish Meat
- Cooked Fish Prime Meat
- Cooked Fish Meat
Keep in mind – Honey needs less feedings, but it actually tames longer than raw mutton. Both has a very similar effectiveness, so take whatever you prefer and you have available.
How to craft a Megatherium saddle?
To learn the Engram for the Megatherium saddle, you need to be Level 52. It requires you to spend 24 Engram Points. These are the resources needed to craft a primitive Megatherium saddle:
325 x Hide
130 x Fiber
100 x Cementing Paste / Achatina Paste
55 x Metal Ingots
How does the Insect Killer Buff of the Megatherium work?
Upon killing an insect, the Megatherium will get a buff called “Insect Killer”. It lasts 120 seconds and increases the Melee damage of the Megatherium insanely and also reduces the damage taken by 75%. This is what makes it so viable against the Broodmother Lysrix because if the Megatherium kills a Spider Minion, it will gain the Insect Killer Buff and do a lot more damage to the boss and futher insects.
The Buff refreshes every time the Megatherium kills another Insect. It means in theory you can keep the buff up indefinitely as long as enough insects spawn. The additional Melee damage also increases the amount of chitin farmed from an insect.
Which attacks does the Megatherium have?
The Megatherium has two attacks on left-click (hit) and right-click (bite). Both do the same amount of damage.
What color regions do Megatherium and R-Megatherium have?
Megatherium:
R-Megatherium:
Notice about the R-Megatherium colors:
Color Regions R1-R3 are named within the game an R1 and R3 also show, but this is most likely due to unclean working. The Mask used to generate the color regions does not have clean colors which leads to certain colors being a stain under another region (compare R1 – R4) and some Regions are only an artifact of blending 2 colors together that are not supposed to be blended (R3). With exception to R2 these will show, but are not intended.
A quote from the ARK Modding wiki:
“The main rule with colorization mask creation is that only colors that naturally blend together can actually mix with each other or else they will create an artifact line anywhere they touch that can be affected by another color region.
For example, red and blue should not blend with each other because where they mix is magenta. If magenta is used elsewhere in the mask, the magenta colorization while be applied everywhere red and blue mix. Even if magenta is not used elsewhere it will still create a white line at all blending points due to white being the default colorization value.”
What are the potential stats of a maximum mutated Megatherium?
Megatherium:
- 254 Life + 88 Level ups + Imprint = 264k
- 254 Melee + 88 Level ups + Imprint = 4.8k
R-Megatherium:
- 254 Life + 88 Level ups + Imprint = 256k
- 254 Melee + 88 Level ups + Imprint = 4.8k
